Pettersson Focuses on Performance Amid Canucks Trade Rumors

Elias Pettersson, the Vancouver Canucks forward, has found himself at the center of trade rumors amid a challenging season. Following a recent 5-1 defeat to the Seattle Kraken, he expressed little interest in discussing speculation about his future with the team.

Benchings and Performance Reflections

During the recent game against Seattle, Pettersson was benched for the final 9:47, which included 2:23 during a period when the Canucks played without a goalie. He acknowledged coach Adam Foote’s decision, stating that he needs to improve his performance. “It’s the media that creates the trade rumors, so ask yourself,” he remarked, indicating his intention to focus on the present rather than various speculations.

Management’s Perspective

In a recent appearance on the “100% Hockey” podcast, Canucks president of hockey operations, Jim Rutherford, downplayed the likelihood of a trade involving Pettersson. “If somebody made a great offer, we’d have to look at it,” he noted. However, he emphasized that Pettersson is not someone they feel compelled to shop around actively.

Contract and Expectations

Monday marked the second anniversary of Pettersson’s eight-year contract worth $92.8 million, averaging $11.6 million annually. At the time of signing, he was integral to the Canucks’ strong performance, with 75 points in 62 games and a total of 89 points for the season, contributing significantly to the team’s push for a division title.

  • Duration: 8 years
  • Total Value: $92.8 million
  • Average Annual Value: $11.6 million

However, Pettersson’s performance has recently faced challenges. In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he recorded only six points in 13 games. Last season, he finished with 45 points in 64 games. Currently, as the Canucks prepare to face the Dallas Stars, Pettersson has achieved 35 points in 51 games this season.

Pettersson has candidly acknowledged his struggles to meet the expectations associated with his substantial contract. “I haven’t lived up to expectations of the contract, and I’ll be the first one to say it,” he commented. With a mindset directed towards improvement, he aims to enhance his game as the season progresses.
