Met Chief Acknowledges Women’s Distrust of Police on Sarah Everard Anniversary
Sir Mark Rowley, the current Metropolitan Police Commissioner, has addressed ongoing concerns regarding women’s trust in the police, particularly in light of the Sarah Everard case. He assumed his role in September 2022, following the resignation of Dame Cressida Dick amid controversies, including Everard’s tragic murder.
Efforts to Restore Trust
Rowley stated that significant efforts have been made to improve the integrity of the Met. He emphasized that about 1,500 individuals have been removed from the organization due to various issues. However, he acknowledged that complete trust from women is still a distant goal.
“This horrific incident has left a lasting impact, and I understand the skepticism,” Rowley remarked. He expressed optimism about the progress made and urged the public to expect more from the police.
Statistics on Misconduct
Recent data released by the Metropolitan Police highlights issues of sexual misconduct within the force:
- 28 members of staff were dismissed for sexual misconduct in the 2024-25 period.
- An additional 39 officers would have faced dismissal if they had not chosen to resign or retire.
These figures illustrate the ongoing challenges the police face in regaining the trust of the community, particularly among women. The Met is under pressure to ensure the safety and confidence of all citizens, aiming for a diligent response to past failings.
