Gasoline Prices Surge Amid Iran Conflict
The average price of gasoline in the United States has risen to $2.94 per gallon, according to recent data from GasBuddy. This increase of 5.6 cents over the past week reflects broader trends in the oil market, influenced significantly by escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
Gasoline Prices Surge Amid Iran Conflict
Over the past month, the national average gas price has grown by 7.8 cents. Interestingly, this average is still 10.1 cents lower than the same time last year. Diesel prices have also seen an uptick, now at $3.740 per gallon, following a 5.4 cent increase.
Factors Driving Price Increases
The continuous rise in gasoline costs marks the fourth consecutive week of increases. Analysts attribute this to seasonal factors coinciding with geopolitical tensions, particularly following U.S.–Iran hostilities. These developments have introduced uncertainty in energy markets.
According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, the elevated geopolitical risks are causing fluctuations in pricing even without actual supply disruptions. He stated, “Looking ahead, gasoline prices are likely to face heightened upward pressure.”
Oil Market Reactions
The last week saw significant gains in oil prices. West Texas Intermediate crude surged by $5.39 per barrel, reaching $72.41. Meanwhile, Brent crude increased by $6.42, hitting $79.29 per barrel. Such price movements stem from fears that ongoing tensions in the region could affect oil shipments through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Current Market Conditions
- U.S. crude oil inventories rose by 16.0 million barrels, but remain approximately 3% below the seasonal average.
- Gasoline inventories saw a decrease of 1.0 million barrels, now sitting about 3% above the five-year average.
- Refinery utilization dropped to 88.6%, which may limit production in the coming weeks.
- Implied gasoline demand decreased slightly to 8.733 million barrels per day.
Regional Price Variations
Across the country, the most common gas price recorded was $2.79 per gallon. Notable price variations include:
- California: $4.58 per gallon (highest average)
- Oklahoma: $2.42 per gallon (lowest average)
- Wisconsin: 23.8 cent increase (largest weekly rise)
While some states have registered significant price increases, others remain comparatively lower. As seasonal factors continue to influence refinement output, motorists should prepare for the potential of the national average surpassing the $3 mark soon.
