DeBrusk Criticizes Canucks’ Rebuild: ‘I Can’t Accept It’

Vancouver Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk has voiced his discontent with the team’s current rebuilding phase. The 29-year-old winger’s performance this season includes 13 goals and 29 points over 59 games. He is under contract until 2030-31 with a cap hit of $5.5 million.

DeBrusk’s Criticism of Canucks’ Rebuild

During an interview, DeBrusk expressed his concerns regarding the Canucks’ strategy. “I think a rebuild is hard for every player, but it’s a great opportunity for younger guys,” he stated. “That [rebuild] is not something I would be okay with or accepting. My game doesn’t fit that.”

Current Trade Status

Reports from TSN journalist Farhan Lalji indicate that the Canucks have yet to receive trade inquiries for DeBrusk. Moreover, the organization is unwilling to retain salary in any potential deal. DeBrusk’s full no-move clause will transition to a 15-team no-trade clause at the conclusion of next season.

Many veteran forwards, including DeBrusk, faced criticism following a recent game where their performance was notably lacking. While he hasn’t formally requested a trade, he seems open to a change. “Obviously, that (rebuild) is not something I would be okay with or accepting,” he reiterated.

Canucks’ Future Plans

The Canucks currently sit at the bottom of the NHL standings as they pivot towards a long-term renovation. This strategy was solidified after they traded star defenceman and captain Quinn Hughes earlier in the season. TSN Hockey Insiders have speculated that Filip Hronek may be the only player considered untouchable on the roster during this rebuilding phase.

DeBrusk’s Performance Overview

Jake DeBrusk was listed as No. 31 on TSN’s latest Trade Bait board, alongside teammates Brock Boeser and Conor Garland. Last season, DeBrusk had a career year, scoring 28 goals and accumulating 48 points over 82 games. Throughout his eight NHL seasons, he has reached the 25-goal mark four times.

Career Achievements

  • Selected 14th overall by the Boston Bruins in 2015.
  • Has scored 179 goals and recorded 343 points in 606 NHL games with the Bruins and Canucks.

DeBrusk stated, “I don’t care how I do as long as we’re winning. We haven’t been winning.” His reflections show a deep understanding of the mental challenges faced by players in a struggling team. The reality of their situation has become clear, presenting a complex future for the Canucks and their roster.
