Xander Schauffele sits one back at 10-under after posting the low round of the tournament Thursday with a 65. Scottie Scheffler is fighting the cut line. Rory McIlroy is in trouble.

Åberg's Sensational Round 2: Eagle-Birdie-Par-Birdie-Eagle on Front Nine

Åberg started his second round on fire — birdie at the first, eagle at the par-5 second. He added his third birdie at the fourth hole to move to five-under for the day and eight-under overall. He then chipped in for eagle from an awkward stance on the par-5 9th to tie Xander Schauffele for the lead at 10-under and fire a front-nine 29 — tying for the lowest score ever posted on the front nine at TPC Sawgrass. He has since birdied again on the back nine to take sole possession of the lead at 11-under.

Åberg hit 11 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in Round 1, going bogey-free with a clinical 69. With the Morikawa withdrawal, McIlroy's back issues, and Scheffler failing to break par in Round 1, Åberg is quickly becoming the class of the field.

Schauffele's 65: Low Round of the Tournament Through 36 Holes

Xander Schauffele posted the low round of the tournament Thursday with a 7-under 65, birdying the tough par-3 8th and the par-5 9th to take the solo lead entering Round 2. Schauffele sits one back of Åberg at 10-under after his morning round concluded.

Scheffler Battling Cut Line — 69 Straight Cuts In Jeopardy

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler went out in 1-over 37 and is currently at 1-over for the tournament — right at the projected cut line with exactly 65 players tied at that figure. His streak of 69 consecutive made cuts on the PGA Tour, the longest active streak by 46 tournaments, is now in genuine jeopardy. Scheffler battled a wayward driver all of Round 1, posting an even-par 72 despite gaining 1.1 strokes on the putting surfaces.

Rory McIlroy Fighting to Make the Cut as Defending Champion

McIlroy managed his way to a 2-over 74 in Round 1, fighting a left miss off the tee all day. Despite calling himself a game-time decision due to back spasms, he showed no signs of physical discomfort on the course — but clearly did not have his best after nearly a week without swinging a club. He is now fighting to avoid missing the cut as the defending champion.

Justin Thomas Returning From Back Surgery — T5 and Surging

Justin Thomas, the 2021 Players champion, is delivering an extraordinary comeback performance. In only his third competitive round of 2026 after back surgery, he posted a 4-under 68 in Round 1 — 11 shots better than his opening round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week where he called his performance humiliating. Thomas added an eagle at the 11th hole in Round 2 to surge to T5 at 8-under.
