Ps5 Pro rush update: Upgraded PSSR rolls out to major games at 1:00 AM ET
ps5 pro owners are getting an upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) rollout tied to the latest PS5 system software update starting in phases at 1: 00 AM ET on March 17. The upgrade expands support across multiple titles and is positioned as a step forward for image stability, fine-detail clarity, and more consistent performance in supported games. Sony Interactive Entertainment says the update also allows improved PSSR to be enabled for existing supported games through an optional system setting, with results that may vary by title.
What the upgraded PSSR changes right now
Sony Interactive Entertainment describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals. With the upgraded version introduced in today’s PS5 system software update, Sony says image reconstruction is more precise, motion stability is improved, and developers gain more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity on PS5 Pro.
The company frames the upgrade as broad support for an “upgraded version” of PSSR, emphasizing enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.
Ps5 Pro game support: titles named for upgraded PSSR
Multiple studios are already integrating the upgraded PSSR into their games. Sony’s list of titles named as adopting the upgraded PSSR includes SILENT HILL f, SILENT HILL 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, Nioh 3, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Sony also stated the upgraded PSSR is already available in the new Resident Evil.
For upcoming game updates, Sony said Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 will receive the upgraded PSSR through patches described as coming “in the coming weeks. ” Sony also stated Crimson Desert will adopt the technology when the game launches on March 19 (ET).
Separately, Sony notes that improved PSSR can also be enabled for existing supported games through an optional PS5 Pro system setting, and the company cautions that results may vary depending on the title.
Immediate reactions from developers and technical testing
Developers whose games are adopting the upgraded PSSR are describing tangible visual gains.
The SILENT HILL f Production Team (Konami Digital Entertainment) said the latest PSSR update delivers “an even smoother gameplay experience” and that fine details—such as “swaying blades of grass” and “shadows cast across the ground”—are rendered with greater clarity, deepening immersion.
Maciej Kurowski, Studio Technical Director, BioWare, said Dragon Age: The Veilguard now supports the new PSSR on PS5 Pro, calling it a “meaningful improvement in image quality” while maintaining stable frame rates in Fidelity and Performance modes.
Tatu Aalto, Graphics Technical Director, Remedy Entertainment, said the upgraded PSSR improves image upscaling quality and stability, responding quickly to visibility changes while keeping motion clear and improving temporal stability—adding that Control and especially Alan Wake 2 benefit on the Pro with better, more stable image quality.
Independent technical testing also pointed to an apparent uplift. Digital Foundry said it tested some upgraded-PSSR titles and found the “new upscaler delivers the kind of upgrade we were looking for from PS5 Pro, ” adding that issues like shimmering, flickering, and other visual artifacts have been addressed, leading to crisper and more consistent in-game graphics.
Quick context on why this update matters
Sony characterizes the rollout as a notable evolution of its AI upscaling stack for PS5 Pro, using frame-by-frame analysis to reconstruct images more precisely. The company also connected the work to AMD and Sony’s combined “Project Amethyst, ” describing it as an effort to improve AI upscaling quality on the same hardware without reducing frame rate.
What’s next after the 1: 00 AM ET rollout begins
The PS5 system software update carrying the upgraded PSSR begins rolling out in phases at 1: 00 AM ET on March 17, and Sony indicates more titles will land support through game updates in the coming weeks. In the near term, watch for patch timelines for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077, and for Crimson Desert launching with the upgraded feature on March 19 (ET). For ps5 pro players, Sony’s optional system setting also opens the door to trying the upgraded PSSR on existing supported games immediately, with outcomes expected to vary from title to title.
