Artist Banksy Revealed as Robin Gunningham — A 26-Year-Old Arrest Just Ended the World's Greatest Art Mystery
Artist Banksy

For three decades, the artist Banksy kept the world guessing. Now, a landmark Reuters investigation published March 13, 2026 has cracked open the mystery that defined modern street art — naming the anonymous creator "beyond dispute" as Robin Gunningham, a 52-year-old Bristol native who legally changed his name to hide in plain sight.

Who Is Banksy — Robin Gunningham of Bristol

Banksy has been conclusively identified as Robin Gunningham, a 52-year-old Bristol native, according to the Reuters investigation published March 13, 2026. The probe uncovered previously unreported police documents and court records proving the identity that eluded the art world for decades.

School records from Bristol Cathedral School show Gunningham was an accomplished artist and athlete, appearing in school productions and playing goalkeeper on the field hockey team. Bristol, a city long famous for its graffiti and music scenes, shaped the creative identity that would eventually take over walls across the world.

The 26-Year-Old Arrest That Unmasked Artist Banksy

A key clue came from an arrest made for graffiti in New York in 2000. On September 18, 2000, authorities found a man defacing a billboard on the roof of 675 Hudson Street. Because damages exceeded $1,500, police sought to charge him with a felony. The man who confessed was Robin Gunningham — his name appearing repeatedly in court and police documents related to the arrest.

After the 2000 arrest, Gunningham faced potential felony charges for the billboard vandalism. With help from his then-manager Steve Lazarides, he secured a public defender, posted bail, and completed five days of community service. The incident remained largely buried until now.

Robin Gunningham Changed His Name to David Jones

Banksy's former manager Steve Lazarides organized a legal name change for Gunningham after a Mail on Sunday exposé in 2008, which successfully ended records for Banksy's movements under his birth name and stymied researchers — until Reuters figured out the new one by examining Ukrainian public records.

Gunningham took the name David Jones, one of the most popular names among British men, with approximately 6,000 men sharing it in the UK in 2017. The name also belongs to David Bowie — whose Ziggy Stardust alter ego inspired a Banksy portrait of Queen Elizabeth. The choice was deliberate, calculated, and almost worked permanently.

Ukraine Trip Sealed the Banksy Identity Case

The Reuters report points to Banksy's trip to Ukraine in 2022 as a pivotal piece of evidence. Images circulated by people from his earlier career and a handwritten confession tied to the 2000 arrest in New York were among the key findings. Reuters said the records from that case identified the artist as Gunningham.

Immigration records showed that a David Jones, with a birth date matching Robin Gunningham's exactly, crossed into Ukraine from Poland on October 28, 2022 — the same location and same day as Massive Attack frontman Robert Del Naja, a known friend and collaborator of Banksy.

Banksy's Lawyer Pushes Back — But Does Not Deny

Banksy's lawyer Mark Stephens responded to the Reuters investigation stating his client does not accept that many of the details contained within the enquiry are correct. Stephens argued that revealing the artist's identity would compromise his safety, intrude on his private life, and undermine his ability to work freely.

Stephens added that working anonymously or under a pseudonym serves vital societal interests, protecting freedom of expression by allowing creators to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation, censorship, or persecution. Crucially, however, neither Stephens nor Banksy's company Pest Control denied the identity outright.

What the Banksy Revealed Story Means for His Art and Legacy

The artwork at Carlton Arms Hotel, archived under the name Robin Banks — believed to be a play on "Robbing Banks" and later shortened to Banksy — further connects Gunningham directly to the pseudonym. In 1997 and 1999, murals attributed to Robin Banks were painted in the hotel's rooms.

Works by the artist Banksy have sold for more than £18 million at auction, including the famous 2018 Sotheby's moment when a framed piece began shredding itself seconds after being sold — a stunt that became one of the most talked-about events in art world history. Whether the unmasking of Robin Gunningham changes how the world values that work remains the art world's next great question.
