Augusta National Criticizes Jason Day’s Masters Outfits
Jason Day is once again in the spotlight for his clothing choices at the Masters. The former world No. 1 golfer has found himself at odds with Augusta National over his outfits. This follows a previous request from the tournament organizers for more subdued attire.
Jason Day’s Unique Outfits at the Masters
This year, Day has partnered with Malbon Golf, having left Nike in early 2024. His wardrobe for the Masters includes the “Birds of Georgia” collection. On Monday, he debuted a busy bird-themed top. Originally, this ensemble was intended to include matching pants.
Augusta National’s Fashion Guidelines
- Augusta National requested alterations to Day’s clothes.
- He was instructed to replace the planned bird print pants with solid-colored ones.
In addition to the tops, Day planned to wear a birdwatcher-themed vest during practice rounds. Sungjae Im, another player sponsored by Malbon, will also sport similar bird print attire. This collection showcases various birds, including scarlet tanagers and blue jays.
Inspiration Behind the Designs
The founder of Malbon Golf, Stephen Malbon, emphasized a connection to nature. He mentioned, “If you are on the course and you are tuned in with nature and know the sounds of birds, you’ll make more birdies.” This philosophy is based on Native American beliefs that attribute different meanings to each bird. Malbon has been sending Day bird sounds for six months to help him connect with nature.
Past Controversies
Day first gained attention for his Masters outfits in 2024. He wore baggy blue pants and a colorful sweater vest during his early rounds. However, tournament officials requested him to remove the vest due to its distraction potential.
This week marks Day’s 15th appearance at Augusta National, where he has previously finished as a runner-up in 2011. As he navigates the tournament’s fashion guidelines, his bold style choices continue to attract attention.
