Connor McMichael Confident in Resolving Contract Extension with Capitals Soon

Connor McMichael, a forward for the Washington Capitals, is a restricted free agent this summer. After completing a two-year bridge contract worth $4.2 million in July 2024, he has begun discussions about a contract extension with the Capitals.

Contract Extension Talks

During the team’s Breakdown Day, McMichael shared that his representatives initiated negotiations with Capitals management earlier in the year.

  • McMichael mentioned: “Kind of had a few talks during the season.”
  • He noted a desire to focus on the playoffs rather than contract discussions.
  • He expressed optimism that an agreement would be reached soon.

Performance Insights

While he appears confident in contract negotiations, McMichael’s recent performance raises questions. The 25-year-old experienced a significant dip in statistics this past season. After achieving personal bests with 26 goals and 57 points in the 2024-25 season, he recorded only 12 goals and 11 points this season.

McMichael attributed his struggles to a decline in shooting accuracy and fewer shots taken. His shooting percentage dropped to 9.9%, below his career average of 11.9%.

Team Dynamics and Challenges

McMichael described the season as difficult, marked by injuries to key players and a lack of team cohesion. He expressed disappointment over missed opportunities that could have propelled the Capitals into the playoffs.

He reflected, “It was a weird year… it felt like it was a frustrating year for most of the guys.” Despite these challenges, he mentioned being proud of how the team fought back towards the end of the season.

Contract Projections

According to AFPAnalytics, a long-term extension for McMichael could cost around $6.4 million over four years. Alternatively, a short-term deal is projected at approximately $4.7 million for two years.

If no agreement is reached by July 1, McMichael can sign an offer sheet with another team, but the Capitals would have the option to match it or accept draft pick compensation.

Offseason Plans

McMichael plans to remain in the Washington, D.C. area until mid-May. Afterward, he will return to his hometown of Toronto for training at Gary Roberts Performance in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He anticipates returning to D.C. in mid-August to reunite with his teammates.
