Stuttgart Open: Muchova finally solves Gauff to reach semifinal showdown

Karolina Muchova finally solved Coco Gauff at the Stuttgart Open, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in Stuttgart, Germany, to reach the semifinals. The Czech player earned her first victory in seven meetings with Gauff and moved into her fourth semifinal of 2026. Muchova now faces Elina Svitolina, who advanced after defeating Linda Noskova.

Muchova breaks through after a long wait

The Stuttgart Open match turned on timely breaks and sharp adjustments from Muchova, who took the opening set after Gauff was troubled by a double fault and a run of forehand errors. Muchova then stayed composed through a second set that swung back and forth before closing out the decider with another late break. The result ended a streak that had gone seven matches without a win for Muchova against Gauff.

Muchova said she knew she would need a high-level performance to have a chance against a player she described as strong on clay. She also said she tried to use slice and rhythm changes to disrupt Gauff’s game, and that approach held up well in the Stuttgart Open quarterfinal.

Gauff exits Stuttgart before the last four

For Gauff, the loss means another early finish in Stuttgart, where she has still not moved beyond the quarterfinal stage. The match also marked the pair’s first meeting on clay, adding another layer to a rivalry that had previously favored Gauff.

The second set briefly looked like it might swing Gauff’s way for good after she broke back and helped trigger a stretch of four straight breaks. But Muchova recovered again at 5-5 and found the final push she needed in the third set, where she broke for a 4-2 lead and protected it with a strong service game.

Svitolina waits after a tight win

Elina Svitolina will be waiting on the other side of the net after defeating Noskova 7-6, 7-5 to reach her fifth semifinal of the season. Svitolina said her serve kept her in the match and helped her adjust to the conditions, noting that the ball was flying quickly through the air. She landed 70% of her first serves and hit 11 aces.

Svitolina had not faced a break point until she served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, where Noskova briefly fought back before Svitolina closed it out.

What the Stuttgart Open now sets up

The Stuttgart Open semifinal now brings together Muchova’s momentum and Svitolina’s steadiness in a first clay-court meeting between the two. Muchova remains unbeaten in the Stuttgart Open draw no longer, but her win over Gauff gives her a clear path into another deep tournament run. The next step is a semifinal that will test whether that form can continue against a player who has handled pressure well throughout the week at the Stuttgart Open.
