A woman in her 40s died after an assault at a house in Grange Heights in Waterford city on Monday evening. Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 6.15pm.
The woman was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. A man, also in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and detained at a Garda station in the Waterford division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
The death has triggered a murder investigation led from Waterford Garda station. A senior investigating officer has been appointed, an incident room has been established, and the scene has been preserved for technical examination.
The State Pathologist was notified and a postmortem examination was expected to take place. Gardaí have also assigned a family liaison officer to support the woman’s family as the inquiry continues.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the Grange Heights area between 6pm and 6.30pm on Monday and may have CCTV or dashcam footage. The arrest and the scene examination point to an investigation moving quickly in the hours after the death, with detectives now depending on footage, witness accounts and the postmortem to establish what happened inside the house that evening.
