Michkov Scratched for Game 5 as Flyers Fall 3-2

michkov was scratched for Game 5 against the Pittsburgh Penguins after going pointless through the first four playoff games. Rick Tocchet made the move because of Michkov’s play, and Philadelphia lost 3-2 on Monday evening as the Penguins stayed alive for a second straight game.

Rick Tocchet and Game 5

Tocchet replaced Michkov with Alex Bump in the lineup, and the change produced an immediate result. Bump opened the scoring, took four shots on net, delivered two hits and logged 15:29 of ice time.

The lineup adjustment did not carry the Flyers all the way through. Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia 3-2 and staved off elimination again, leaving the Flyers with a short bench decision that turned into a one-goal loss.

Michkov’s quiet first four

Michkov’s numbers through the series explain why the coach moved on from him for Game 5. He played no more than 11:25 in any of the first four playoff games, and across Games 2 and 3 combined he logged 17:40.

That usage came after a regular season in which the 2023 seventh overall pick finished with 20 goals and 51 points in 81 games. The Flyers had also juggled the lines in Game 4 and kept those changes for Game 5, with Tyson Foerster moved down alongside Noah Cates and Denver Barkey bumped up to the top trio with Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett.

Flyers’ lineup choices

The choice fit a playoff series in which Philadelphia had been searching for offense and had scored two goals in each of its previous two losses. In that setting, the Flyers prioritized the best available lineup over Michkov’s development in the short term.

Two executives from other NHL teams agreed with the decision after Michkov’s first four playoff games, a rare outside check on a move that put performance ahead of pedigree. For a 21-year-old who arrived as a major piece of the future, the message was plain: in Game 5, the Flyers wanted the lineup that gave them the best chance to win that night.
