Tina Yazdani takes The Trillium role after CityNews exit

Tina Yazdani said her departure from CityNews was unfair and that she will begin a new role as Queen's Park reporter for The Trillium on Monday, May 4. She said the change comes after nearly eight years at the Rogers-owned outlet and follows two weeks of public silence after her April 13 exit.

April 13 exit

Yazdani said, "The way that my employment ended was unfair" and added, "I stand by all of the journalism that I did, I stand by all of my work – I am proud of the work I did. I am a strong believer in holding power to account and asking the tough questions." She said she had wanted to handle the matter privately with the media corporation before deciding she would take formal steps to address it.

She also said, "I loved my job" and described her ousting as "a complete shock." Those comments put a specific response on the record after a stretch in which the public had only the fact of her departure and the immediate reaction around it.

The Trillium role

Yazdani said her next job is at The Trillium, where she will cover Queen's Park. She said the outlet has "set the bar high," and thanked people for messages and support, saying, "I want to say thank you so much for all of the support and the messages" and, "It has meant so much to me knowing how much my journalism and my work has resonated."

The new post begins Monday, May 4. For readers who followed her Ontario politics reporting, the practical shift is straightforward: her work will continue in the same corridor of provincial politics, but under a different masthead and at a time when attention around her exit has already traveled beyond the newsroom.

Her move also closes one chapter and opens another. After nearly eight years at CityNews, Yazdani is returning quickly to the beat she held there, and her public remarks make clear that she intends to keep pursuing the same reporting standards in a new setting.
