Aston Villa U-turn Sends Douglas Luiz Toward Juventus Return

Douglas Luiz could be heading back to Juventus after Aston Villa changed course on the 27-year-old midfielder. Villa are reportedly no longer keen to keep him, and that opens the door to another transfer move after his January loan switch and brief revival in February and March.

Juventus Deal Fractures

Juventus bought Luiz from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024 on a deal worth €50 million, including Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea. That move never settled into a long stay in Turin. He endured a forgettable campaign there, with injuries, relapses, managerial changes and personal issues all disrupting his run.

Villa then brought him back to Unai Emery's camp on loan with an option to buy for €25 million. That figure now sits at the center of the next decision, because Villa may be willing to keep him for less, while Juventus cannot afford to hand over a discount if it forces a capital loss on their books.

Spalletti And The Midfield

Luciano Spalletti does not appear eager to build around Luiz again. In January, when Nottingham Forest terminated his loan stint and opened the way for a return, Spalletti had the chance to reintegrate him but kept his midfield intact instead.

That hesitation leaves a narrow path. A new loan with Aston Villa may be the cleanest solution for all sides if a permanent agreement does not line up with Juventus's finances. Douglas Luiz is already familiar with both clubs, and his route could again mirror Arthur Melo's path through Turin rather than settle quickly anywhere long term.

Villa’s Recent Shift

Luiz did show a useful spell between February and March at Villa, but his role has been reduced in recent weeks. That drop in minutes comes at the same time Villa's stance has softened, which makes the summer conversation less about whether he fits and more about what structure the two clubs can actually afford to complete.

For Villa, the immediate choice is between trying to lower the price on a player they already know or letting Juventus push for a return. For Juventus, the issue is whether they can keep the accounting clean enough to move him again without taking the kind of loss that closes off the deal entirely.
