Marco Rossi Skips World Championship After Foot Setback — Suzuki Nick

Marco Rossi said suzuki nick his season was played through a broken foot, then made worse when he broke it again in the same spot while being treated. The Canucks centre said the injury started in October and never fully cleared, leaving him to finish a hard year with recovery now taking priority.

Rossi's October break

“It’s still not 100 per cent,” Rossi said last week when speaking with Sportsnet 650’s Satiar Shah and Bik Nizzar. He said, “I broke my foot in October and then played with a broken foot for 10 games, for 15 games,” a run that carried into his time with the Minnesota Wild through Nov. 11.

Rossi was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 12 and played eight games before going on an injury hiatus until after the Olympics. The 24-year-old said, “It’s been a really hard season for me,” and described the second break this way: “And then, getting treated, I broke my foot again at the same spot.”

Canucks minutes and recovery

Foote’s February warning now sits in sharper focus. The head coach said, “The foot just got to a spot where it could, if he kept going, it could have been career-ending if he might have shattered it or things like that,” before the Canucks returned to game action.

That context helps explain why Rossi’s early stretch with Vancouver drew attention after the fact. He was described as a key piece of the Quinn Hughes trade, but his first eight games with the club did not show the same comfort he found later.

Brock Boeser and the finish

After the Olympic break, Rossi’s production changed. He had 20 points in his final 25 games, second on the Canucks over that stretch behind only Brock Boeser, and the two developed chemistry while skating together.

Rossi said, “But overall, the last couple of games, I felt better.” That mattered because his season closed with one clear decision: he told an Austrian sports outlet that he is skipping the World Championship next month to focus on recovery.
