Environment Canada Halifax warns of 25 to 40 mm of rain Sunday
Environment Canada Halifax issued a special weather statement for the Halifax area ahead of heavy rain expected on Sunday. The agency said 25 to 40 mm of rain could fall, with heavier showers possible in the strongest bursts, and the system is expected to last until early Monday morning.
A low pressure system is forecast to track over eastern Nova Scotia, bringing a period of significant rainfall. The heaviest rain is expected to begin Sunday afternoon, and Environment Canada advised people to clear storm drains and gutters of debris before it arrives.
Eastern Nova Scotia forecast
The same system could bring thunderstorms to central and western parts of Nova Scotia, while wet snow may mix in at times over higher elevations. Environment Canada also forecast a mix of sun and cloud on Monday, with clearing near noon and a high of 13.
Monday is expected to be cooler along the coast. For Halifax-area residents, the immediate step is simple: clear drains and gutters before Sunday afternoon, when the rainfall is expected to turn heaviest.
Battle of the Atlantic ceremonies
The forecast comes as ceremonies in Nova Scotia on Sunday are set to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, fought from 1939 to 1945. That timing puts rain, wind and possible thunderstorms alongside outdoor events scheduled for the day.
By early Monday morning, the system is expected to move on, with conditions improving later Monday as skies clear near noon.
