Trey Yesavage to start Sunday after 5.1 scoreless innings

trey yesavage will start Sunday for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Minnesota Twins after holding the Boston Red Sox to 5.1 innings of no-run ball in his season debut on Tuesday. John Schneider said the young right-hander handled the move well, and Toronto is keeping his workload on a steady five- or six-day cycle.

Yesavage earns another start

Schneider said Yesavage “did really well stepping in,” then laid out the next step as pitch-count growth and a regular turn through the rotation. “So, nothing really out of the ordinary for Trey. I know what I don't want to do is expect him to strike out 10 or 12 or 14 hitters every outing and just have some realistic expectations for him,” Schneider said.

That keeps the focus on repetition rather than a spike in strikeouts. Yesavage’s Tuesday outing gave Toronto a usable start immediately, and the club is now asking for the same shape again against Minnesota.

Berrios stays in Buffalo

Jose Berrios will throw a bullpen in triple-A on Friday and make another rehab start with Buffalo on Sunday. He has missed the entire 2026 season with an elbow injury, so Toronto is still counting on rehab outings before it can think about putting him back into its regular plans.

“He's gonna throw in triple-A today, just a bullpen (session), and kinda stay on his routine,” Schneider said. The timing leaves Toronto with Yesavage in the major league rotation for Sunday while Berrios keeps working at a lower level.

Barger edges toward return

Addison Barger is also moving forward. He has been out of the lineup since April 5 with an ankle injury, but Schneider said he is running the bases in the Player Development Complex and is scheduled to play in Dunedin on Sunday.

“Addy's doing well. He's running the bases today — I think he's just getting done with that now — down in the (Player Development Complex). And then he's gonna play in Dunedin on Sunday,” Schneider said. Before the injury, Barger had one hit in 19 at-bats. Toronto still has him on a short rehab path, with another game likely to follow on Tuesday before the club evaluates where he is physically.
