Eci Result: Election Commission starts May 4 count in five contests

The Election Commission of India began the eci result count on May 4 for assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. Counting was expected to start at 8 am, and the result picture was likely to be clear by evening.

The count covers 294 seats in West Bengal, 243 in Tamil Nadu, 140 in Kerala, 126 in Assam and 30 in Puducherry. West Bengal also has one unresolved seat, Falta, where all 285 polling stations will go to repolling on May 21 and will not be part of the May 4 results.

West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu

In West Bengal, 2,926 candidates were in the fray across two phases of polling, with Mamata Banerjee contesting Bhabanipur against BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari. The majority mark in Bengal is 148, while the state waits for results from all but Falta.

Tamil Nadu went to the polls in one phase, with 4,023 candidates contesting and MK Stalin running from Kolathur. The majority mark there is 118, giving the count immediate weight for the DMK-led contest once the ballots are opened.

Kerala, Assam and Puducherry

Assam also voted in a single phase, with 722 candidates in the race and Himanta Biswa Sarma contesting Jalukbari. Kerala had 883 candidates, and Pinarayi Vijayan is contesting Dharmadam as the state awaits its 71-seat majority line.

Puducherry had 294 candidates contesting 30 assembly seats, and chief minister N Rangasamy is contesting a seat in the Union territory. Its majority mark is 16, the lowest among the five counts, so even small swings can shape the final arithmetic.

Falta and May 21

The only seat left outside the May 4 count is Falta, where all 285 polling stations will undergo repolling on May 21. That means West Bengal’s full assembly picture will not close with the first tally, even as the rest of the state and the other four contests move toward a result the same day.

For voters and candidates, the practical next step is the tally itself: postal ballots first, then Electronic Voting Machines about 30 minutes later, with the outcome expected by evening in the main contests. The only seat still waiting for a separate vote is Falta.
