Law enforcement shoots one near Washington Monument in Secret Service Shooting

A person was shot by law enforcement near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon in Washington, D.C., in a secret service shooting that brought an immediate security response to the area. The White House was briefly put under a lockdown as law enforcement investigated near 15th Street and Independence Avenue.

Several roadways near the monument were closed for hours, including a stretch of Independence Avenue SW from 14th Street to Maine Avenue SW and 15th Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Maine Avenue SW. D.C. police said the scene is secure, and the Secret Service told people to avoid the area.

The shooting happened near the Sidney R. Yates building, where the Forest Service is headquartered. The U.S. Secret Service said it was not immediately clear what led up to the gunfire, and the extent of the wounded person's injuries was not immediately available.

D.C. police said to expect the closures to last for several hours, leaving drivers with limited access around a stretch of downtown Washington that sits close to the White House and the Washington Monument. That made the response more than a single-block police scene; it also affected traffic on roads that connect key federal landmarks.

White House lockdown

The brief lockdown at the White House was lifted as law enforcement continued working the scene, and the Secret Service remained on site. Jessica Kronzer, a WTOP reporter, identified the sequence of events in Washington as police held the perimeter and kept the nearby roads shut.

For people moving through the area, the practical change was immediate: avoid the closed roads, expect delays near the monument, and watch for the barriers to stay in place for several hours while police and the Secret Service maintained the security response.
