Bobby Wagner Utah State Speaker Receives Honorary Doctorate
Bobby Wagner Utah State speaker took center stage Wednesday night, and Utah State University gave him an honorary doctoral degree during its 139th Commencement Ceremony. He addressed 6,335 graduates statewide at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in a role that linked his college career to the school’s graduation night.

Wagner said the moment changed how he wanted to be addressed. “If you didn’t know, my name is now Dr. Bobby Wagner,” he said after receiving the degree.
He pushed the joke further for anyone in the family still using his old name. “And to any family members here, you need to update my name in your phone. It’s ‘Dr.’ now. I will no longer respond to ‘Bobby.’ It’s Dr. only.”
Wagner’s Aggie record
Utah State’s decision fit a resume built in Logan. Wagner started 46 of 48 games for the Aggies and finished with 446 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 29.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.
That college production came before a 14-year NFL career in which he piled up 2,000 tackles and 39.5 sacks, made 10 Pro Bowls, and won a Super Bowl championship. On February 5, 2026, he received the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award.
What Wagner told graduates
Wagner used the platform to tie the honor back to the university and the people around him. “People get mad at me when I say ‘The’ (Utah State University), but you guys don’t understand how special this college is, how much this means to me, and how much none of this in my life could’ve been possible, if it wasn’t for Utah State,” he said.
He told graduates that his path came through the school, his coaches, and his family. “From the students, to my coaches, to my family — this would not be possible. I’m here because I took a chance. I’m here because of people who believe in me.”
Utah State also said Wagner will join two other former Aggies whose jersey numbers will be retired, adding another layer to a night that already honored former Aggies Are Serjoie, Stan Albrecht, and Joyce Albrecht. His place in the ceremony was not just ceremonial; it folded a former player into the university’s graduation stage as 6,335 students moved into the next step of their lives.
Wagner closed by keeping the focus on the Aggies. “And I just want to see us win. … It’s really we — us together — trying to show those other Utah places that they are not Utah State,” he said.
