Kevin Trainor Mass State Police killed in Route 1 crash

Massachusetts State Police trooper Kevin Trainor was killed early Wednesday in a head-on crash with a wrong-way Jeep on Route 1 in Lynnfield. He was 30 and a three-year veteran of the agency, preparing to travel home from his shift when the collision occurred.

State Police said multiple drivers called 911 around 2 a.m. to report a gray Jeep heading south in the northbound lanes. About 17 seconds after a trooper warned that the vehicle was near the Lynnfield tunnel and heading toward Saugus, the Jeep and Trainor’s cruiser collided head on.

Geoffrey Noble briefing

State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble identified Trainor later Wednesday morning and said, “Trooper Trainor today saved lives this morning,” adding that he was “willing to put his life on the line” and “will be remembered as a hero.” Noble also said, “The vehicle, a Jeep, collided with Trooper Trainor’s cruiser head on.”

Noble said, “In the blink of an eye, those reckless actions stole Kevin,” and told reporters, “We know that there are difficult days that lie ahead.” He also said, “Kevin epitomized what it means to be a public servant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

Maura Healey response

Governor Maura Healey said, “We lost a hero today,” and added, “He was doing heroic work in the early hours this morning when this terrible tragedy befell us.” Brian Williams, president of the State Police Association of Massachusetts, said Trainor was “commuting home when he selflessly responded to a call involving a wrong-way operator, putting himself in harm’s way” and that his actions reflected “the very essence of service and dedication to the communities we serve.”

Williams also said, “Trooper Trainor is a hero. He served with courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to” and called the crash a “reminder of the risks our members face each and every day.” The case leaves one immediate public-safety reality in place: a wrong-way call on Route 1 drew multiple 911 reports, and a trooper who responded never made it home.
