Joey Elizabeth Shaw killed in Bristol explosion after Ryan Kelly forced entry
joey elizabeth shaw, 35, died in a Bristol explosion on Sunday after Ryan Kelly, 41, allegedly forced entry to a house in Sterncourt Road, Frenchay, while believed to have an explosive device. Police are treating her death as a homicide and have referred themselves to the police watchdog because of earlier contact with her.
The first call came at 06:17 BST from a person inside the property. By 06:30, the caller said the intruder was believed to be in possession of an explosive device, and the blast followed about two minutes later.
Frenchay Police Response
Officers reached the scene at 06:34 and were joined shortly afterwards by fire and ambulance crews. Three other people, including a child, were treated for minor injuries and did not need to stay in hospital.
Matt Ebbs, a superintendent with Avon and Somerset Police, said Shaw’s death was being recorded as a homicide, based on the information known to us at this time. He also said, We know everyone's thoughts and sympathies will be with her devastated family, and added, We recognise there is significant interest in what happened, but at the centre of it there are many people grieving and we would please ask everyone respects that and gives them the privacy they want.
Avon and Somerset Inquiry
Police said the force referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because of previous police contact with Shaw before Sunday. Avon and Somerset Police said that earlier contact related to other domestic incidents.
Ebbs said, We believe the cause of the explosion to be deliberate. He also said, Analysis work of the explosive device has not yet been completed, while police said the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
An army bomb disposal team and specialist police officers carried out extensive searches of the area after the blast. A search of an address in nearby Speedwell linked to Kelly did not require evacuations of surrounding properties.
