Nguyen Van Huong warns of Frío storms, hail from May 7

Nguyen Van Huong, head of the Meteorological Forecast Department at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said frío weather will bring widespread thunderstorms across Vietnam from May 7 to May 12. He said the pattern is typical in May’s seasonal transition and warned that some areas could face heavy rain above 100 mm.

From the afternoon of May 7 to the morning of May 8, the northern region and the provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An are expected to get rain, moderate rain and scattered thunderstorms, with rainfall of 20 to 40 mm. Some local areas could receive heavy to very heavy rain exceeding 100 mm, while Ha Tinh to Hue is forecast to see 10 to 30 mm and localized rain above 70 mm.

Nguyen Van Huong on hail risk

Huong said the northern region has many favorable factors for strong convection. He said cold air continues to compress and push the low-pressure trough southward there, while wind convergence reaches up to 5000 m. He also said hail forms when ice particles in thunderstorm clouds do not melt completely before reaching the ground.

He added that hail is dangerous, but not unexpected because the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has periodically warned about it in its bulletins. He gave that warning as the southwestern region was set for scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening of May 7, with 10 to 20 mm of rain and some local areas above 50 mm.

May 8 to May 12 forecast

From the night of May 8 to May 11, the northwestern region is expected to have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with heavy rain in some areas. On the night of May 8 and during May 9, the northeastern region is forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, including scattered rain and showers in the lowlands.

From May 10 to May 11, the northeastern region is expected to have scattered showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain in some areas. In the central region, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening, especially in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An from the night of May 8 through May 9. The southern region is forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas, especially from May 10 to May 12.

For residents in the warned areas, the immediate reading is simple: the earliest heavy-rain window begins on May 7, and the hazard spreads across several regions before easing into the southern forecast later in the period.
