Thameslink suspends trains between Mill Hill Broadway and Bedford May 9-10

thameslink will suspend trains between Mill Hill Broadway and Bedford on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, forcing passengers north of Mill Hill Broadway onto rail replacement buses while engineers carry out essential work. Jenny Saunders, Thameslink’s customer service director, said the journey will take longer than the normal train ride and told passengers to check their journey before setting out.

Thameslink will run replacement buses between Mill Hill Broadway and Luton, and between Luton Airport Parkway and Hitchin via Luton. It will also run buses on a number of local routes in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. East Midlands Railway services will not be able to run south of Bedford during the same period.

Mill Hill Broadway and Bedford

Saunders said, “I’m sorry our Thameslink passengers north of Mill Hill Broadway on the Bedford route will have to take a rail replacement bus this weekend because of this essential engineering work.” She added, “This will take longer than the normal train ride, so please go online to check your journey before you set out and allow any extra time.”

The closure affects services across the Bedford route over the full weekend. Trains to St Albans City will terminate short at West Hampstead Thameslink or Kentish Town, while trains to Bedford will terminate at West Hampstead Thameslink or Mill Hill Broadway. Extra stops at Hendon, Brent Cross West and Cricklewood will be added to the Bedford service.

St Albans and Radlett

Dan Matthews, Network Rail operations director, said, “This weekend we’re carrying out further improvement work to make the railway more reliable and resilient for passengers and freight.” He said the work includes “renewing track at St Albans, upgrading drainage and installing points at Radlett, and continuing our work to deliver step-free access at Luton station.”

The work includes 300 metres of new track in St Albans, drainage works in Radlett and a footbridge at Luton station. Services between Luton and Rainham will terminate at London Bridge, adding another change for passengers using the route through south London.

Luton station works

Matthews said, “We appreciate everyone’s understanding while these important improvements take place, and we’re sorry to anyone whose journey will be affected.” For passengers north of Mill Hill Broadway, the practical choice this weekend is simple: use the replacement buses, allow extra time and check the altered service pattern before travelling.
