Olivia Chow Unveils Free 22-Day Toronto News FIFA Fan Festival
Toronto news: Olivia Chow says the city’s FIFA World Cup Fan Festival will be free, after council voted down a proposed $10 general admission fee. The 22-day event will run at Fort York and the Bentway during the 2026 World Cup, giving residents a free entry point to a tournament where Toronto will host six games.
Fort York And The Bentway
The festival will span 13 zones at historic Fort York and the nearby Bentway. City details released Monday include a FIFA store, a 40-foot viewing screen, multiple eating areas, an Indigenous marketplace, a mini soccer pitch and a pitchside terrace.
Live broadcasts of 46 matches will be shown at the festival, along with live music, cultural showcases and community programming. The lineup includes Kardinal Offishal presenting Soundclash Society, plus AHI, Alessia Cara, Allied Nations, Anna Sofia, Bedouin Soundclash, Big Wreck, The Brokes and Choir! Choir! Choir!
Olivia Chow's Free Entry Push
Chow urged residents to “show up and join the party” and said, “No cost, no barriers, everybody is welcome,” at a press conference at Fort York on Monday. Her comments followed last week’s council vote to scrap the general admission charge after staff had proposed the $10 fee two weeks earlier.
The city said removing ticket revenue left a $5-million gap in the festival budget. It plans to fill that gap through sponsorships and other new revenue, while attendees will need to reserve spots online through Ticketmaster.
The access change matters most for residents who cannot afford match tickets, since the festival is meant to offer free viewing during the 22 days Toronto hosts part of the tournament in June and July. With six World Cup games in the city and live match coverage across the site, the festival now functions as the open-access side of Toronto’s tournament plan.
