Bruno Fernandes Wins Fwa Footballer Of The Year After 20 Assists

Bruno Fernandes won the fwa footballer of the year award after producing eight goals and 20 assists in 34 games for Manchester United. The award ends a 15-year gap for the club, with the last United player to win it coming in 2010.

Fernandes Leads Manchester United

The United captain’s season was built on output. He added chance creation to goals, and the numbers put him at the center of the club’s attack across all competitions.

Fernandes also played a key role in Manchester United’s upturn in form under interim boss Michael Carrick. That run has not carried all the way to silverware, with the club set to finish the season without a trophy for a second year in a row.

Rooney’s 2010 Mark

Wayne Rooney was the last Manchester United player to take the FWA men’s award before Fernandes. The gap between winners says plenty about how unusual this season has been for a club still on course to finish third in the Premier League and secure Champions League football next season.

Fernandes joined Manchester United from Sporting in January 2020 for £67.7m, and he reached his 300th appearance for the club earlier this season. He rejected a huge offer from Al-Hilal at the end of last season, and turned aside interest from other teams in Europe to stay at Old Trafford.

Old Trafford And 2027

That decision left Manchester United with their captain still in place as his contract runs to 2027 and includes an option for another year. Fernandes said in October last year, “I will not discuss my future with anyone until after the upcoming World Cup.”

For United, the award gives the club a player accolade in a season that has still fallen short of a trophy. For Fernandes, it is a season-end marker built on goals, assists, and the kind of output that kept his name at the front of the vote.
