Arsenal Head to Villa Park With Seven Points Needed — Aston Villa Vs Arsenal
Arsenal’s trip to Villa Park for aston villa vs arsenal now carries a clear target: seven points from their final three league games to guarantee second place and avoid Champions League qualifying rounds next season. The rearranged Saturday lunchtime fixture gives Renee Slegers’ side no room to drift after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton handed Manchester City the WSL title.
Villa Park and Arsenal’s target
The match was pushed back because UEFA has kept Champions League semi-finals at the weekend, leaving Arsenal to navigate a compressed finish to the league season. Their remaining three games are away at Aston Villa, at home to Everton and away to Liverpool, so the margin for error is already gone before they kick off at Villa Park.
Slegers said Arsenal had been affected by absences and by the aftermath of the Lyon semifinal. “we all felt that we weren’t at our best (at Lyon). So we had to manage that and deal with that.”
Slegers and the absences
The squad picture is thinner than usual. Steph Catley is still unavailable after a calf injury but is back in training, Leah Williamson misses the game because of “a niggle” and will not travel, while Manu Zinsberger, Katie Reid and Michelle Agyemang are out with ACL injuries. Kyra Cooney-Cross is on compassionate leave in Australia.
That group of absences leaves Arsenal managing the end of the season while trying to keep pace in a tight race for second. Slegers also pointed to the stretch between match weeks three and 10, when Arsenal took 10 points from 21 available, as part of the backdrop to the run-in.
Arsenal’s final three games
Saturday’s visit to Villa Park is the first of those three matches, and Slegers framed it as another test of focus after the Brighton draw and the Lyon semifinal. “We also have to be very aware that we have to be in the here and now and enjoy what we’re doing together, because there will be players and staff leaving at the end of the season. So we really want to cherish these moments that we have together and make the absolute most of it.”
She also said Arsenal would need to adapt to whatever Aston Villa bring, but the response starts with their own level. “What exactly they are gonna present to us- Let’s see both technically and personnel wise, let’s see who’s available for them and how they’re gonna attack the game. We will have to be dynamic, but we’ve been talking about focusing on our own game anyway because we’re so good when we’re at our best, so we want to bring our own best game, regardless of their tactical plan. So that means doing our basics really well tomorrow.”
For Arsenal, the equation is simple: collect seven points from Villa, Everton and Liverpool, and second place is theirs without needing the qualifying rounds that would follow a slip in the final week of the season.
