Semenyo Incident Leads to Arrest of 71-Year-Old Everton Fan
A 71-year-old man was arrested after alleged racist abuse toward semenyo during Everton’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday. Merseyside Police said the man from Nottinghamshire was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
Hill Dickinson Stadium Arrest
Police said supporters and stewards reported that racist abuse was shouted by a fan during the match. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and police said they continue to work closely with Everton FC.
The arrested man was later bailed with conditions that include not going within one mile of any designated sports stadium in a period of up to four hours before kick-off, during the match, and up to four hours after the game has ended. Everton said behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated.
Everton And Police Response
Everton said racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable, adding that they have no place in its stadia, its sport or society. The club said it will continue to work closely with the authorities to support their investigation and will take the strongest possible action in line with its zero-tolerance approach.
Manchester City praised the swift action of Everton and Merseyside Police after the 3-3 draw, which also ended with England defender Marc Guehi facing online racist abuse. City said it was incredibly disappointed to hear that Guehi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night, and said it will continue to offer full support to both Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi.
Semenyo's Second Case
This was the second time Ghana international Semenyo, 26, has been the target of racist abuse this season. While playing for Bournemouth in the opening Premier League match of the season, he reported being racially abused by a spectator during a 4-2 defeat at Liverpool.
Semenyo has said more should be done to tackle racism in football, including possible prison sentences for those convicted of abuse. Monday’s arrest puts the focus back on what happens inside stadiums when abuse is reported: swift removal, police action and a case that is still being investigated.
