Bobby Cox Dies at 84 After Braves Hall of Fame Run
bobby cox died at 84, ending the life of one of the Braves’ defining figures. The former manager and Baseball Hall of Famer shaped the club’s most sustained stretch of success, and the team said his legacy will not be matched.
The Braves said Cox led them to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants and the 1995 World Series title. They also said his love of baseball was exceeded only by his love of his family, and extended condolences to his wife Pam, their children and their grandchildren.
Braves tenure under Cox
Cox was named Braves manager in 1978, then was fired after the strike-shortened 1981 season. He returned in 1986 as general manager before becoming manager again after Russ Nixon did not push the team to glory.
That return set up the run that defined his career in Atlanta. The Braves said he helped guide them through a stretch that produced 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants and the 1995 World Series title, a span that made him the club’s central figure for more than a decade.
Hall of Fame record
Cox’s standing went beyond Atlanta’s trophy cases. The Braves said he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, and his managerial career closed with 2,149 wins, 1,709 losses and a.557 winning percentage.
He also won four Manager of the Year awards and finished with 158 ejections, the all-time record. Those numbers match the reputation he built over two stints with the Braves and a final season he announced in September 2009 would end in 2010.
Atlanta Braves response
“We are overcome with emotion on the passing of Bobby Cox, our treasured skipper.” “Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform.” “He led our team to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the unforgettable World Series title in 1995.” “His Braves managerial legacy will never be matched.”
For Braves fans, the loss closes the book on the manager who bridged eras from Ted Turner’s hands-on ownership to the franchise’s 1990s dominance. The team’s tribute left little doubt about how it views his place in club history, and it tied that history to both the record book and the family he leaves behind.
