Johns Hopkins Opens at Cornell in 14,229-Day Gap — Cornell Lacrosse

Johns Hopkins opens cornell lacrosse tournament play at seventh-seeded Cornell on Saturday, May 9, and the matchup lands after a gap of 14,229 days between the teams. The winner moves on to the NCAA Quarterfinals at Hofstra on Saturday, May 16.

Hopkins Returns to Schoellkopf Field

Faceoff is set for 5 pm at Schoellkopf Field on ESPNU. Johns Hopkins is 9-5, while Cornell enters at 11-4, giving the first-round game a clear contrast in records and recent form.

The teams are meeting for the first time in 39 years. Johns Hopkins will be making its record 50th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a run built on 73-40 all-time tournament play and a 17-5 mark in first-round games.

Cornell and Hopkins Enter After Losses

Both teams come in off championship-game defeats. Johns Hopkins fell to Penn State, 16-8, in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday, May 2, at Rutgers, and Cornell lost to Princeton, 19-9, in the Ivy League Championship game on Sunday, May 3, at home.

Cornell is ranked sixth in the USILA Poll and fifth in the KANE Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Johns Hopkins is ninth in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the KANE Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, setting up a meeting between two ranked teams with different seeds and a long break between them.

Hofstra Awaits the Winner

The winner will advance to Hofstra and play the winner of Notre Dame-Jacksonville in the quarterfinals. Johns Hopkins also carries a 9-2 all-time record against the team seeded seventh in the NCAA Tournament, which adds another layer to a game already shaped by the 39-year gap.

Ernie Larossa, Johns Hopkins’ director of athletic communications, laid out the matchup in the game notes, but the numbers say enough on their own: a 50th NCAA appearance, a 14,229-day pause, and a quarterfinal berth waiting on the other side.
