Toby McCain-Mitchell Hit With 32-Day Toby Mccain-mitchell Whip Ban
Toby McCain-Mitchell’s toby mccain-mitchell whip ban now totals 32 days after multiple breaches of the whip rules in the last six months. The suspension runs across a long stretch of race dates from May 16 to June 16, with nine days held in reserve if he commits another whip offence.
McCain-Mitchell at Aintree
The latest breach came at Aintree last month, where he used the whip twice above the permitted level while riding Melon in the 2m½f conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle. Melon finished second past the post before Laafi was disqualified after Patrick O'Brien used his whip four times more than allowed, and McCain-Mitchell's mount was then promoted to winner.
The case was McCain-Mitchell’s fourth breach in the last four months. He had already been serving a ten-day suspension for his ride on Top Of The Bill in the Grand National at Aintree the day after Melon’s race, after being deemed to have failed to pull the horse up when tailed off prior to a fall at the final fence.
Tim Grey's ruling
Tim Grey said he had considered whether fast-track procedure was appropriate in “a case of such seriousness” and the “equine welfare issues it raises” before ratifying the plea agreement. He added: “In conclusion I am satisfied that the proposed agreed course is the right one.”
The governing body proposed that nine days of the penalty be suspended for 150 rides or six months, whichever came first, and those nine days would only be activated if another whip offence takes place. The decision leaves McCain-Mitchell out on May 16, 17, 19, 20, 22-25, 27, 28, 30, 31, June 2-4, 6, 7, 9-13 and 16.
McCain-Mitchell's season
McCain-Mitchell ended the 2025-26 campaign with 34 winners and £464,110 in total prize-money. He is the grandson of the late Ginger McCain, who trained Red Rum to win the Grand National three times, a family link that sits behind a punishment that now wipes him from more than a month of racing.
For a jockey coming off a season of 34 winners, the practical effect is straightforward: those listed dates are gone, and the suspended portion hangs over every ride until the 150-ride or six-month trigger is reached.
