Fredericton race leads Elections Nb voting across 77 municipalities

Residents across New Brunswick are voting in elections nb today to choose mayors, councillors and other local representatives in 77 municipalities. Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the ballot also includes district education council representatives.

Fredericton’s mayoral race is one of the province’s more closely watched contests. Jenica Atwin, a former Liberal MP, is running against two challengers: long-time city councillor Steve Hicks and former construction worker John Reid.

77 municipalities voting

The vote reaches far beyond Fredericton. Across the province, residents are electing local representatives in 77 municipalities, covering mayors and councillors in one sweep of municipal contests.

The scale of the ballot is uneven. More than 150 local seats will be filled by acclamation, while some seats have no candidate at all. That leaves many communities with contests today and others with no vote at all for those positions.

Fredericton mayoral race

Atwin’s candidacy puts a former federal MP into a local race against two familiar names in Fredericton politics. Hicks brings long-time council experience, while Reid enters as a former construction worker seeking the city’s top job.

The three-way race gives Fredericton voters one of the province’s more direct choices today. For residents casting ballots there, the decision will shape who leads City Hall and which candidate carries the city into the next term.

Polls open until 8 p.m.

Voters who have not yet cast a ballot still have until 8 p.m. to do so. The day’s schedule gives local residents a fixed window to decide races that range from city leadership to district education council representation.

With some seats uncontested and others drawing multiple candidates, the election offers a clear split between communities already settled and places still waiting for a count. In Fredericton, the result will come down to Atwin, Hicks and Reid, while across the province the broader tally will show how many races were decided before voters even arrived.
