Micheal Voss Resigns After 99 Games as Carlton Coach
micheal voss has stepped away as Carlton coach after handing in his resignation in recent days, ending a tenure that began in September 2021. His exit comes after Carlton’s 11-point loss to Brisbane on Friday night left the Blues 16th on the ladder with a 1-8 record and only one win this season.
Brisbane Loss Sealed the Mood
Carlton were down by as much as 49 points at the Gabba before trimming the margin to 11, but the result still sat as another setback in a season that has gone nowhere fast. Voss said the game showed the group’s capacity and also fit a familiar pattern, because it asked his side to play for longer.
“We fought, which was pleasing,” he said after the loss. He added: “We could tell especially after half-time that there was a confidence growing with the group.”
Even with that response, the margin to Brisbane kept the focus on the larger issue. Carlton had put together brief periods of resistance, but the scoreboard still reflected a side that has too often been chasing the game.
Voss Leaves Carlton at 47-1-51
His Carlton record finished at 47-1-51 from 99 games. That includes the high point of a preliminary final in 2023, which now sits against the backdrop of a collapse in results that has left the club 16th and carrying a 1-8 start.
Voss put the pressure in plain terms after the Brisbane game. “But we've still got to be better than playing a half of football, we've got to put more time together than that,” he said. “We can't be comfortable in mediocrity, we've got to have higher standards of ourselves than that.”
He finished with the bluntest line of the night: “We've put ourselves in positions in most games but I'm also sick of saying that.” Carlton now move into a coaching change with the season already heavily compromised, and the numbers around the resignation leave little room for spin.
