Trump nominates Kari Lake to Jamaica ambassadorship
President Donald Trump nominated kari lake as the U.S. ambassador to Jamaica on May 11, the White House said. The post now moves to the Senate, where ambassadorial nominations need approval before anyone takes the job.
Lake's path through Arizona politics
Lake arrives at the nomination after two statewide races in Arizona. In 2022, she ran for governor against Democrat Katie Hobbs, who won that race.
In 2024, Lake ran for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kyrsten Sinema and lost to then-Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego. According to the, Lake never conceded her gubernatorial loss and was involved in a number of election-related lawsuits.
Voice of America and March 2026
Trump had earlier chosen Lake to lead an agency that oversees Voice of America and other media services such as Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Lake terminated contracts and laid off most of the employees with Voice of America before a federal judge ruled in March 2026 that Lake lacked legal authority to dismantle the institution.
That sequence leaves the Senate vote as the immediate gatekeeping step on the Jamaica posting. If senators move Lake forward, the former television figure and two-time Arizona candidate would shift from domestic political fights into a diplomatic role tied to Jamaica.
