Akheem Mesidor Goes 22nd Overall to Chargers
Akheem Mesidor went 22nd overall to the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2026 NFL Draft, giving them the pass rusher they targeted after Odafe Oweh left in free agency. The University of Miami edge rusher arrives with a path to early snaps and a roster spot built around pressure off the edge.
Mesidor is the player the Chargers chose to address that need. The selection comes after Oweh posted 7.5 sacks in 12 games in 2025 and then left for a four-year, $96 million deal with the Washington Commanders, leaving the Chargers to add another body to a front that already includes Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu.
Mesidor’s rookie path
The Chargers are betting on Mesidor’s physical profile and polished pass-rushing skill-set to produce quickly. He has the alignment versatility to move inside when needed, and he also has the power to take advantage of the lanes created in three-edge-rusher sets.
That combination gives Los Angeles a cleaner rotation option than waiting for a veteran market move. The draft pick also fits the speculation that kept going after the draft about whether the Chargers would still add another pass rusher through trade or free agency, but this selection gives them a first-round answer instead of another outside search.
Chargers edge-rush depth
Behind Mack and Tuipulotu, the Chargers needed a third piece who could handle more than a one-down role. Mesidor is the type of rookie who can be moved around rather than parked in one spot, which lets the defense use his power and inside flexibility without asking him to play only one lane.
There is some friction in the profile. Mesidor has injury history concerns, and he will be 25 by the start of his rookie season, so the Chargers are not buying the usual developmental timeline that comes with a younger first-round edge rusher.
Los Angeles adds immediate pressure
Even with those concerns, the Chargers used the 22nd pick to make the edge-rush need a draft-day answer. For a defense that lost Oweh and needed another pass rusher this offseason, Mesidor steps in with a clear role and a chance to contribute right away rather than waiting for a longer rebuild on the edge.
