Sony Handheld Console 2027 Stays Unset as PS6 Price Wait Continues

Sony handheld console 2027 is still a question mark at the top of Sony’s planning, and Hiroki Totoki said the company has not decided when to launch the PlayStation 6 or what it will cost. That leaves the next console cycle open while Sony is already spending more on the next-generation platform.

Hiroki Totoki on PS6 timing

Totoki said, "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices" on Sony’s financial call through the company’s translator. He added, "So we would like to really observe and follow the situation."

For buyers, that means there is no launch window to plan around and no price tag to anchor an upgrade decision. For Sony, it also means the PS6 is still being shaped against sales trends that are already softer than the last cycle.

PS5 sales and Sony pressure

Sony sold about 1.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the three months ended March 31, and lifetime PS5 sales reached 93.7 million units. That quarterly total was slightly below the 2.6 million units the PlayStation 4 sold in the equivalent quarter.

Sony also said it expects income to be flat year-on-year because of higher investment in the next-generation platform. The company is spending into the next cycle while the current one is still moving units, which limits how much room it has to guess wrong on timing or price.

Memory costs into FY 2027

Totoki said rising memory prices could increase the cost of the bill of materials and manufacturing for consoles. He said, "Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply."

He also said Sony has acquired the necessary volume of materials for the rest of calendar year 2026 and has to a certain extent agreed on the price itself for that period. That gives Sony short-term cover, but it does not solve the larger question of how it will price the PS6 if memory stays tight into FY 2027.

Totoki said, "We would like to think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy." David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, said earlier this year that PlayStation 6 is not likely to release any time soon, and that Sony expects the PS5’s lifecycle to be extended.
