Stanisława Celińska dies at 79 after major stage and screen career
Stanisława Celińska died at 79, ending a career that stretched across theatre, film and television. Joanna Trzcińska announced the news on social media and said Celińska died in the afternoon.
Noce i dnie and Orzeł wins
Born on 29 April 1947, Celińska built a career that moved from Andrzej Wajda’s Krajobraz po bitwie to major Polish titles including Noce i dnie, Panny z wilka, Alternatywy 4 and Katyń. She later won the Polish Film Award Orzeł in 2001 for Pieniądze to nie wszystko and again in 2010 for Joanna, a two-decade span that kept her visible across generations of Polish screen audiences.
Her work was not limited to film sets. She graduated from the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Teatralna in Warsaw and performed at the Teatr Współczesny, Teatr Nowy, Teatr Dramatyczny, Teatr Studio, Teatr Kwadrat and Teatr Nowy in Poznań, while also appearing in serials such as Zmiennicy, Samo Życie and Barwy szczęścia.
The wording placed faith at the center of the announcement, matching the way Celińska spoke about comfort later in life.
“Oddałam to wszystko. Wiedziałam, że z tak głęboko zakorzenionymi rzeczami poradzić sobie może tylko Najwyższy” Celińska said in the past when discussing relief through faith. That sits alongside a harder part of her biography: she said fame was beyond her strength, that balancing work and private life overwhelmed her, and that she struggled with addiction.
Two children, one public life
Celińska met Andrzej Mrowiec during a substitute performance in Wesele, married him and had two children, Mikołaj and Aleksandra. The marriage later ended after the strain between her private and professional life grew, which makes her long run through film, television, theatre and music read less like a neat career arc than a life lived under pressure.
For Polish film and stage audiences, the immediate change is simple: one of the country’s most familiar performers is gone, and the work now stands as the record. The performances in Noce i dnie, the Orzeł wins in 2001 and 2010, and the concerts she gave across Poland are the parts that will carry her name forward.
