Keir Starmer Issues China British Steel Nationalization Warning Before Wednesday
Keir Starmer said on Monday that the government would legislate to nationalise British Steel, a move that could put the Scunthorpe plant under public ownership within days. His china british steel nationalization warning lands after 13 months of government control in practice, while Jingye Steel remains the nominal owner.
Scunthorpe and 2,700 jobs
Starmer tied the plan to the future of 2,700 jobs and to the ability to keep making primary steel from iron ore. He said: “Strong nations in a world like this need to make steel”.
The plant has already been through a rapid change in ownership and control. The government recalled parliament 13 months earlier for a Saturday sitting to take control of the steelworks, and officials have been in charge since then even though Jingye Steel, a Chinese company, stayed on paper as the owner.
From Tata Steel to Jingye Steel
The Scunthorpe works has been passed around for years. Ownership moved to Tata Steel in 2007, then to Greybull Capital in 2016 for £1, and Greybull Capital walked away in 2019 before the Conservative government brokered a takeover by Jingye.
That history leaves the latest decision with a narrower focus than a general industrial rescue. The issue now is not whether British Steel has changed hands before, but whether the state will take formal ownership after already stepping in to run the site.
Wednesday King's Speech
Nationalisation was expected to be included in Wednesday’s king’s speech, giving the plan a formal parliamentary route after Monday’s announcement. British steelmakers have argued that they pay higher energy costs than other European economies and China, and Jingye last year threatened to walk away and leave the blast furnaces to fall into disrepair.
The Scunthorpe furnaces also carry the weight of age: two were first built in 1938 and the other two in 1954. For workers at the site, the next stage is no longer about speculation over ownership but about whether the government turns its promise into legislation and moves the plant into public hands.
