West Ham Set £38m Man Utd Mateus Fernandes Transfer Plan

West Ham’s man utd mateus fernandes transfer story has moved to the next stage: the club expect to sell Mateus Fernandes this summer to help fund recruitment. The 21-year-old arrived from Southampton for £38 million and has quickly become a player they are prepared to move on.

Fernandes Under West Ham Scrutiny

Fernandes has made 40 appearances this season and delivered five goals and four assists, which explains why elite interest has followed him. Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs looking at the midfielder, who signed a five-year deal with one further year and has no release clause in his contract.

West Ham have still seen enough to treat him as a sellable asset rather than a long-term hold. That decision comes only nine months after his arrival and shows how aggressively the club are planning for the next transfer window.

Paqueta Exit Opens Space

His role has grown since Lucas Paqueta left for Flamengo in January. Nuno Espirito Santo initially preferred Paqueta as West Ham’s main attacking midfield outlet, but Fernandes stepped up after that departure and started to shape the side’s attacking work from deeper areas.

He has also delivered in key moments. Two of his four assists for West Ham came in wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley, and he scored a long-range goal in the 3-1 victory against Sunderland in January.

Southampton Sell-On Clause

The transfer chain around Fernandes is still moving behind the scenes. Southampton negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause when he left, after he joined them from Sporting CP in August 2024 for £15 million and later won their fans’ player of the season award for the 2024-25 campaign.

His earlier numbers also explain the attention he has drawn. Before West Ham, he scored twice and provided four assists in 36 league appearances for Southampton, and Sporting only managed five league appearances from him after signing him from the Portuguese club.

West Ham’s winter and spring form suggests they will not be sentimental about a player whose value is already rising. Fernandes came close to scoring in last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal, another reminder that his market has moved fast enough for the club to consider cashing in while his profile is still climbing.
