Lamont orders Connecticut flags lowered Friday for Peace Officers Memorial Day
Connecticut flags will be lowered to half-staff on Friday for peace officers memorial day after Gov. Ned Lamont issued a statewide directive. The order covers the Connecticut State Capitol building and all other state-operated buildings, grounds, and facilities statewide, with flags lowered from sunrise to sunset.
Lamont tied the directive to the national observance that honors local, state and federal law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. He also encouraged everyone else to lower flags to half-staff for the day.
Lamont's Friday directive
The governor said in a statement that, “Our law enforcement officers must be commended for their commitment to public safety and their willingness to put themselves in the path of danger in order to protect the lives of complete strangers.” He added, “There’s not a single person in our state whose life has not been impacted in some way by a police officer, whether they know it or not.”
Lamont said, “We honor and salute every law enforcement officer who has given their life in the line of duty.” He also said, “Their memories will not be forgotten, and we thank them for their dedication.”
Peace Officers Memorial Day
Peace officers memorial day is recognized annually during National Police Week. The observance is meant to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty, and Connecticut’s Friday order places the state Capitol and every other state-run building under the same half-staff schedule.
Lamont also said, “I also want to acknowledge all the families of law enforcement officers, who themselves make many sacrifices over the course of their loved one’s service, and especially those who have lost a loved one in the line of duty.” For residents and state workers, the practical step is straightforward: observe the lower-flag directive from sunrise to sunset Friday, including at the Capitol and other state facilities.
