Toyota Compact Pickup Truck News: Ogawa backs RAV4-based truck plans

toyota compact pickup truck news centers on Toyota Motor North America president and CEO Tetsuo "Ted" Ogawa, who said a RAV4-based pickup is an opportunity for the company. He said dealers are waiting, and added that "it takes time."

The company has been contemplating a compact-sized pickup for a while. Ogawa said there is definitely demand for a compact-sized truck, while Cooper Ericksen said, "It's not a matter of 'if' at this point," adding, "We're dedicated to it. We're going to figure out how to make it work."

RAV4 and Toyota planning

Toyota is reportedly considering a compact pickup based on the bestselling RAV4 SUV, which uses the sixth-generation model's TNGA-K architecture. The RAV4 is available only with gas-electric powertrains, including a standard hybrid with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and up to 236 horsepower, plus a plug-in hybrid with 324 horsepower.

That points to the platform Toyota may be trying to use if it wants a smaller truck without building from the ground up. Toyota already sells the Tacoma and Tundra, but this proposal would place the new truck in a different space, aimed at buyers looking for a compact alternative in the Ford Maverick segment.

2023 Toyota compact pickup

In 2023, Automotive News reported that a Corolla-based pickup was under consideration, with both compact models planned for Toyota's Mississippi assembly plant. The newer RAV4-based idea shows how Toyota's small-truck plans have shifted while the company keeps working on the same broader goal.

For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: Toyota is not treating a compact truck as a one-off rumor. Ogawa and Ericksen both described it as an active plan, and the RAV4 gives Toyota a concrete path forward if it chooses to move ahead.
