Omaha Weather: Severe Storm Threat Brings Monday Risk to 5 Cities

Omaha weather turns unsettled Saturday as scattered supercell thunderstorms are possible in the Central Plains and Omaha is among the cities in the threat area Saturday and Saturday night. The severe weather threat grows Sunday, with tornadoes, hail and damaging winds possible across the Plains.

Des Moines, Lincoln, Omaha and Sioux Falls are among the cities named for the Saturday and Saturday night threat, while Monday could bring the most widespread severe weather from Texas to Michigan. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has also mentioned the potential for strong to intense tornadoes in parts of the Central Plains by Monday evening.

Omaha Saturday Night

Through early Saturday, the best chance of severe thunderstorms is in Iowa, with storms possible from west Texas to Wisconsin overnight. Damaging winds and large hail are the biggest threats overnight, and a couple of tornadoes are also possible, especially in Iowa.

By Saturday afternoon and evening, scattered supercell thunderstorms are possible in the Central Plains near a frontal boundary, a dryline and an area of low pressure. Large hail, strong wind gusts and a few tornadoes are possible as those storms fire up, and they may form into clusters overnight in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota with damaging winds the main concern.

Sunday To Monday

The severe weather outbreak is possible beginning Sunday, and the forecast calls for multiple rounds of thunderstorms. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center mentioned the potential for both strong tornadoes and a squall line of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds in the Central Plains and upper Midwest by Sunday evening.

Monday could be the most widespread threat, with severe thunderstorms possibly extending from Texas to Michigan. Omaha is included in that area, along with Des Moines, Kansas City, Madison and Wichita, and the hazards listed for Monday and Monday evening are tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and flooding rain.

May Severe Weather Pattern

The setup may keep producing storms after Monday. More severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday ahead of the frontal system from parts of the Southern Plains to the mid-Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, possibly into the Great Lakes, and scattered severe storms are possible again Wednesday and Thursday in parts of the South and East.

For Omaha, the practical point is simple: the first round is Saturday and Saturday night, but the broader severe-weather threat peaks again Monday, when the storm area stretches much farther and the hazards widen.
