Trevor Story Goes on 10-Day IL, Red Sox - Braves Lose Shortstop
The Red Sox put Trevor Story on the 10-day injured list dated to May 15 with a sports hernia, then brought up Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester before red sox - braves at Truist Park. The move strips Boston of its regular shortstop for Saturday night’s middle game in Atlanta.
Story’s Numbers Slid in Boston
Story, 33, was hitting.206 with a.244 on-base percentage and a.303 slugging percentage when the club made the roster move. He also had six errors, tied with Zach Neto for the most among American League shortstops.
Those numbers left Boston looking for another answer at the position. Andruw Monasterio had been the backup shortstop and drew three starts with Story on the bench over the previous three weeks, but Marcelo Mayer is the natural shortstop in the system and had been playing second base before a possible move back over.
Sogard Joins the Infield Mix
Sogard gives the Red Sox a 28-year-old option with experience across the diamond. He had played parts of the past two seasons with Boston and seen time in the infield and outfield, which gives the club another way to cover the spot while Story is out.
Boston now has to bridge at least the start of Story’s absence without its usual shortstop, and the date attached to the injured-list move points to a stretch that could reach beyond one series. For a club already juggling infield options, Saturday night in Atlanta becomes a test of how quickly it can settle on one alignment.
