Authorities urge caution after 13-foot shark death near Rottnest Island — Horseshoe Reef Shark News

horseshoe reef shark news: A 38-year-old man died on Saturday after a reported 13-foot shark attacked him at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, off Western Australia’s western coast. The attack happened just before 10 a.m., and the man was later brought back to shore but never regained consciousness.

A spokesperson for St. John WA Ambulance said, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark,” and added, “The man was conveyed by vessel to shore, where he was met by St. John WA paramedics. Sadly, the man was unable to be revived.”

Rottnest Island and Perth

Authorities said the shark was reported to be a great white shark. Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged the public to take “additional caution” in the area after the attack near Rottnest Island, which sits about 19 miles west of Perth and is described as a popular tourist spot.

Australia fatal attacks in January

The death was the second fatal attack in Australia so far this year. In January, a 12-year-old died a week after he was attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbor.
