Michael Carrick Backs Ego as Man Utd Vs Nottingham Forest Nears
Michael Carrick wants Manchester United’s edge to come from inside the dressing room as man utd vs nottingham forest approaches. He said top-level players need ego, but only if it is turned toward the group. That message lands before United’s final home game of the season.
Carrick and Manchester United
Carrick said the challenge is not removing ego, but channeling it. “The ego is a funny one, actually, because I think to perform at the top, top level, you’ve got to have some sort of ego. You need and that could be used in all sorts of different ways, so I think how you use it, really, is the key thing. And I think the part of me, of learning and being here and seeing others, better players than me, dealing with that and sacrificing themselves for the team. I think putting the ego from yourself into the team is important and you’ve got to have some sort of ego to fight for and to be attached to.”
He followed that with a sharper line on how it should look in practice. “It doesn’t have to be an ego where it’s an individual thing or it’s a negative in any way. I think it’s essentially a pride in yourself and what you’re kind of working towards. I think all our egos, which we’ve got in different ways. I think it’s clear to see the spirit, connection and camaraderie that everyone’s pulling in one direction, to put their ego into the football club can be quite powerful and we’ve got to use that.”
The 44-year-old’s comments sit against a cleaner backdrop than the one he inherited. Manchester United have secured Champions League football, and the season’s closing stretch now carries more weight around selection, standards and who fits the next phase.
Casemiro and Nottingham Forest
Sunday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest will be Casemiro’s emotional farewell for United, with the midfielder set to depart Old Trafford this summer. That gives the match a direct edge beyond the points on offer, because it closes one chapter while the squad keeps moving toward another.
Carrick also singled out Elliot Anderson, a player United are interested in and one Forest value highly. “He’s done well,” Carrick said. “I think he’s a big part of their team. I think he offers so much and they’ve got a really talented and dangerous team, so they’ve had a good season to get to the [Europa League] semi-finals and just fall short. But, yeah, you can see obviously he’s an important part of their team.”
Forest have quoted a record-breaking £120 million fee for Anderson, a figure that sits neatly inside the wider shift around United’s recruitment. Reports say the club are moving toward sustainability and player sales before major new arrivals, with a broad agreement on a multi-year deal for Carrick also said to be in place. Sunday’s match now links immediate team selection to a summer built less on noise and more on structure.
