Dick Harpootlian to Address Murdaugh Lawsuit, Monday Press Conference

dick harpootlian is set to provide more updates Monday after Alex Murdaugh filed a federal lawsuit on Sunday against former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill. The lawsuit says her interactions with the jury violated his constitutional right to a fair trial, and it follows last week’s South Carolina Supreme Court ruling that threw out his murder convictions.

Becky Hill Lawsuit

Murdaugh’s filing targets Hill over her role in the jury interactions tied to his 2023 murder conviction. The court found that Hill had a hand in that conviction, then set aside the verdict last week, opening the door to a possible retrial.

That leaves Murdaugh back in a legal fight that now runs on two tracks: the federal lawsuit against Hill and the criminal case that may return to court. He had been sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, before the state’s top court threw out the convictions.

Alan Wilson Response

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said the state has all options on the table in Murdaugh’s case, including the death penalty. That position keeps the state’s next move broad while the defense pushes for more updates at the Monday press conference.

Harpootlian and Jim Griffin are expected to address the case then, but it is unclear whether they will take up the federal lawsuit or focus on the retrial question. The most immediate issue for Murdaugh is no longer just the old conviction; it is how fast the case moves toward another proceeding and under what charges.
