Jason Katims Leads Highway To Heaven Fox Reboot to 2027-28 Season

Fox has ordered the highway to heaven fox reboot for the 2027-28 season, putting Jason Katims in charge as showrunner and executive producer. The move brings Michael Landon’s NBC series back after 42 years, with a new version built around a probationary angel sent to Earth to help people and earn his wings.

Katims said, “I’m excited by the challenge of putting a contemporary lens on this classic tale.” He added, “The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me — and fun. I love going outside my comfort zone to tell a tale about someone trying to do better as an angel than he did as a man.”

Jason Katims and Amblin Television

The reboot is being developed by Katims, Amblin Television, and Michael Landon Productions. That lineup gives the project a direct line back to the property’s original creative DNA while also putting a veteran television producer on the lead creative job for the new version.

Michael Thorn said, “With the incredible pairing of Jason Katims, Cindy Landon, and the Amblin team, we’re building on Highway to Heaven’s timeless legacy of transformation and optimism in a way that feels deeply relevant and relatable to our audience.”

Michael Landon’s 1984 to 1989 series

Highway To Heaven aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989, with Michael Landon creating the series and starring as Jonathan Smith. Victor French played Mark Gordon in the original run. The new order is designed to revive that framework for a 2027-28 launch, not simply keep the title in circulation.

Cindy Landon said, “Highway To Heaven has always been about connection, compassion and the idea that small acts can have big ripple effects and make a lasting difference.” She added, “I’m proud to help carry Michael’s legacy forward with partners like Fox and Amblin, who understand the heart of this series and are bringing it to a new generation at just the right moment.”

Fox’s 2027-28 lineup

The order fits Fox’s push to bring familiar properties back with a clear creative lane, and this one arrives with an established premise instead of a blank-slate remake. For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: the project is past the idea stage and has moved into series development for a future season.
