Delhi University Extends Eviction Deadline for University Hostel for Women

Delhi University extended the University Hostel for Women students’ stay until June 30, 2026 after an overnight eviction protest outside the hostel. The administration said students can remain without additional charges, ending the immediate pressure to leave in May.

The order also restores chairs in the reading room and coolers in the mess. Students had said they already paid hostel fees for June and July, while an extra Rs 450 per day had been imposed for anyone staying beyond the deadline.

University Hostel for Women

Students stayed outside the hostel past midnight on Friday night, raising slogans against the university administration. They said the protest was a fight for dignity and basic rights after what they described as deliberate harassment during the examination period.

Among their complaints was a cut in water supply to two hostel blocks for several days. Students also said chairs were removed from the reading room while they were preparing for semester examinations and the UGC-NET.

May 16 Assurances

The dispute had already surfaced on May 16, when the hostel provost verbally assured students that water supply and other facilities would soon be restored and that they would be allowed to stay for some more time. A similar protest took place that day.

By May 22, the administration changed course and let students remain in the hostel until June 30, 2026 without additional charges. The move also removed the extra daily charge that students and the All India Students' Association described as extortion.

AISA Delhi University

AISA Delhi University called the outcome a major victory for student unity and accused the university administration of creating an atmosphere of forced eviction in the hostel. The group had demanded that the hostel provost resign after the protest.

For students at the University Hostel for Women, the immediate result is a stay extension and the return of basic facilities inside the hostel. The pressure now shifts from leaving in May to living under an order that removes the added Rs 450 per day charge and keeps them housed through June 30, 2026.
