Trump Backs 48-1 Daylight Saving Time Vote in Congress

President Donald Trump backed making daylight saving time permanent after the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a larger bill on Thursday by a 48-1 vote. The measure included the Sunshine Protection Act, which would end the twice-yearly clock changes.

Trump used a Thursday Truth Social post to praise the vote and press Congress to move the issue forward. His post said the bill would make Daylight Saving Time permanent and argued that people, cities and states spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year changing clocks.

Trump's Truth Social Post

Trump wrote, "Big Vote today (48-1!) in the Energy and Commerce Committee on a Bill including The Sunshine Protection Act, which will be making Daylight Saving Time Permanent! This is so important in that Hundreds of Millions of Dollars are spent every year by people, Cities, and States, being forced to change their Clocks. Many of these Clocks are located in Towers, and the cost of renting, or using, Heavy Equipment to do this twice a year is prohibitive!"

He added, "It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production. It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it! We are going with the far more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter Day — And who can be against that — This is an easy one!"

Rep. Vern Buchanan said the legislation had 32 bipartisan cosponsors in the House. Senate companion legislation S. 29, introduced by Sen. Rick Scott, had 18 bipartisan cosponsors.

The proposal would not compel a state that does not observe daylight saving time to start observing it. That leaves the bill focused on making daylight saving time permanent for states already on the schedule, rather than changing every state at once.

April 2025 Push

Trump also addressed the issue in April 2025, when he wrote on Truth Social, "The House and Senate should push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day. Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!!"

The House committee vote now puts the measure in line for the next step in the House, while Trump has already made clear he wants Congress to act on the permanent-daylight-saving-time proposal.
