Dallas Fire-Rescue Ends Drilling Search After 3 Die, 5 Hurt
Dallas Fire-Rescue ended its drilling search after a gas explosion at an Oak Cliff apartment building killed at least three people and injured five others. Chief Justin Ball said search efforts had concluded and that everyone in the building is accounted for.
The explosion hit a 23-unit building with 19 occupied units. One of the injured was critically hurt, and Dallas officials said 19 families were affected.
Oak Cliff Apartment Explosion
Ball said crews searched the site with cadaver dogs and drones until 2 a.m. on Friday. By Thursday at 9 p.m., all victims who needed a hotel had been accommodated, and 10 families were put in hotels after their units were destroyed.
The building’s occupancy gives a clearer picture of how many people were caught in the blast. Nineteen of the 23 units were occupied, which left a large share of the building’s residents displaced even after rescue crews finished looking for victims.

Ball’s Friday update closed the immediate search phase, but it did not end the response. Dallas staff is working on long-term housing for those affected, and Dallas Fire-Rescue is working with non-profits to get home kits available for victims.
Mission Oak Cliff is also holding a donation drive for people affected by the explosion and fire. For residents who lost their units, the practical question now is housing, replacement supplies, and how quickly local support can reach the 19 families still working through the fallout.
NTSB Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board has taken the lead on the investigation into the cause of the gas explosion. The cause has not yet been determined, and the agency’s role points to a formal review of what happened at the Dallas apartment building.
For the people displaced from the 23-unit complex, the search ending means the focus has shifted from rescue to recovery. The next step is securing housing and supplies for the families who were forced out after Thursday afternoon’s blast.
